2 days of Web confusion

Posted on February 28, 2007 under General

2 days aftering opening a Web Fusion account and 3 calls later to technical support account I still can’t access the control panel of the new account or ftp into the server.

I’m not hopeful either that this will be sorted out today. Support claim it’s a known issue and is affecting other account holders which doesn’t ease the pain.

In the past I’ve settled with an American hosting company DiscountASP.NET who in terms of hosting features, support and cost are hard to beat. Downtime has been virtually non-existant. This experience doesn’t exactly convince me of British hosting.

Hopefully the account can get set-up correctly today though I’m not holding my breath.

Wordtracker Belfast and Escorts

Posted on February 23, 2007 under General

Yesterday was spent doing a bit of keyword research and analysis for a client.

After I’d finished the work and logged the time spent, I decided to have a nosey about what people searching for Belfast wanted. I guess it didn’t come as much of a surprise that Belfast and escorts must have alot in common!! Yes indeed a very popular keyword search with a predicted 125 searches for the day.

One other gold nugget that Wordtracker threw up was that content management Belfast was more or less up for grabs and had predicted searches of 37 the same number as Belfast City Airport. Lets see how targeting this keyphrase goes over time.

Wordtracker was definitely worth the spend and keyword analysis is a subject that I’m looking forward to learning more about at Search Marketing World.

Search Marketing Conference

Posted on February 13, 2007 under General

Just fired off a very substantial cheque for Search Marketing World 2007 that takes place March 21, 2007 in Dublin.

The Search Engine Marketing conference has a tasty host of guest speakers including Danny Sullivan a renowned authority on search and search engines as well as representatives from all the big engines including Google.

Although it’ll probably mean leaving around 4-5 in the morning and trekking down to Dublin I’m very much looking forward to it and the three sessions below spring out from the programme immediately.

  • Keyword Research Tools, Tips & Tricks
  • Google Adwords
  • Measuring Search Engine Marketing Success

It’ll be a great opportunity to learn how the experts create, implement, monitor and track search marketing campaigns and it might even be a good opportunity to meet up with one or two developers.

If you’re interested then drop me an email.

Irish Directory Listings

Posted on February 8, 2007 under General

Yesterday I had a phone call from a guy who has spent a good bit of money on his website though over the course of a year hasn’t had any inquiries. He’s very unhappy with the service his current web design company offers and the rather high maintenance bill which is just an after build hidden cost as far as he’s concerned.

I had a look round and noticed that his site hadn’t any real degree of promotion so it’s no wonder he’s getting little traffic and no conversions.

Anyway here’s a starting point to increase your online presence. Submit your site to the free Irish directories below.

Small World

Posted on February 6, 2007 under General

Just last week I sold a piece of software to a web developer in Israel. Usually my purchasers are mostly from North America so it was a pleasant change.

With a free PayPal business account the transaction took no time at all. There was a couple of emails exchanged regarding the product’s capabilities but that only took a minute or two. The software was delivered electronically so even that was straightforward.

Just goes to show you that there really isn’t any economic borders on the internet and there’s a vast number of potential customers out there.

Yellow Pages not delivering

Posted on February 2, 2007 under General

Well since I took out a 1/4 column inch Yellow Pages ad for a king’s ransom of £400+ in the ‘Internet Web Design’ section in November (3 months ago) there’s been one business related phone call.

The salesmen had quoted an average of 18-20 per month for that particular section, and even though I had taken this with a pinch of salt the difference is hard to believe.

A couple of weeks after the books were delivered ‘Talkback’ discussed people’s experiences with Yellow Pages. Many of the advertisers were more than disappointed that many of the books were not being properly distributed.

In my case it looks like they have not only been poorly distributed but that the amount of traffic looking for design isn’t as big as Yellow Pages salesmen would have you believe. The ad was designed by Yellow Pages staff so I presume they knew what they were doing and can’t blame it on a poorly pitched design.

And just to let you know the inquiry didn’t relate to a service that I offered!

Web Business in N.Ireland

Posted on February 1, 2007 under General

It’s about time I got a blog up and running so here goes.

Over the last 7 to 8 years having built Codefixer and a whole host of other websites I’ve gained valuable experience in web design, development, internet marketing, e-commerce and running an online business.

Hopefully this blog will give other small to medium sized businesses particulary within N.Ireland ideas on how they can promote and run a successful online business.

It’ll also give me an opportunity to sound off about poor quality websites, the overall failure of the business community to really utilize the web as a business tool and other pet hates.

Enjoy!
